Belts and hoses
The belts and hoses in your vehicle play an active part in your vehicle’s cooling system, air conditioning system, and engine. Coolant hoses can include the upper and lower radiator hoses in addition to heater hoses. The hoses provide a flexible connection between the engine, radiator, engine and heating block while the belts can have different functions depending on your vehicle.
A serpentine belt- or drive belt- provides power to the air conditioning compressor, power steering pump, cooling fan, and more. It is made of a thick and durable rubber, intended to last between 60,000 and 100,000 miles under ideal conditions. Over time, both the belt and tensioner may need to be replaced due to wear over time. As a belt gets older, it can fray, crack, become shiny, and little rubber parts can peel off from the belt. As the belt ages, it may begin to slip or squeak, become misaligned, or become contaminated with various fluids. In any of these cases, the belt will need to be replaced. When the belt cracks, slips, or ultimately wears out, everything in your engine can stop working. When you have your belt inspected or replaced regularly, you will minimize the safety risk of an untimely breakdown.
A drive belt tensioner is a pulley mounted on a spring mechanism that is used to hold tension on the engine belts. The tensioners are designed to hold a predetermined amount of tension on the serpentine belt so that the belt can drive the various engine components. When the belt tensioner has an issue, it can affect the overall performance and functionality of the vehicle. Some of the most common symptoms of a failing tensioner can be squeaking or squealing noise from the engine when the vehicle is first started or a grinding noise as the tensioner is wearing out. It is important to have your belt tensioner inspected alongside the belt as a damaged tensioner can cause damage to the belts.
Because belts and hoses can be difficult to visually inspect, be sure to follow your manufacturer’s recommended guidelines for schedule maintenance.
