Oil & Filter Changes

What is the purpose of the oil in your BMW’s engine? With everyday usage, the engine and its components can get hot. The oil is to lubricate the engine and its components to ensure that everything flows freely inside the engine. There are many different types of oil and the differences relate to the viscosity of the oil and the temperature that the oil performs best in. Each vehicle will have a different grade of oil from 5W-30 to 10W-40. Over time, as the engine heats up and cools down, the engine oil breaks down and wears out. As the oil breaks down, it becomes less effective.

Most manufacturers recommend replacing the oil between 3,000 and 10,000 miles and will suggest either synthetic or conventional oil. For BMW vehicles, it is typically recommended to change the oil once annually or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. The synthetic oil needs to be changed less often as it is a specially designed formula to last longer and withstand higher temperatures and more usage.

When you change the oil, there is typically a filter that will need to be changed with the oil. The filter collects and separates any debris in the oil from the engine parts that the oil needs to flow through. When you regularly change the vehicle’s oil and filter- you will ensure that your vehicle’s engine is well lubricated and will last a long time throughout all of our seasons.
